Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is a modality of treatment that involves the healing of aged, damaged or injured tissues in the body through the use of regenerative properties found in platelets. This therapy has been used in he dental world since the 1990’s but its popularity has risen through sports medicine uses.
How does it work?
A designated amount of blood is drawn and then placed in an FDA cleared centrifuge for separation. The platelets are then activated and injected into the areas of concern to begin the regenerative process. The PRP treatment is simple and minimally invasive that can be completed within an hour.
Why is this worth considering?
This novel therapy benefits by improving collagen production, new blood vessel and nerve regeneration. Harnessing the healing properties of your own platelets is a low risk proposition to address issues like hair loss, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, aesthetic facial procedures and orthopoedic concerns. There is very low risks involved since it is your own blood.
Are there any side effects?
Your own blood is being used, so there is no risk for blood infected transmissions. PRP has an antibacterial effect so there is low risk for a local infection. You may have increased soreness or pain afterwards for up to 3 days. There may be some bruising at injection sites.
Does insurance cover this?
This is not an insurance covered procedure as the indications for PRP are still very new and not considered reimbursable.
