IV Nutrition Therapy

July 5, 2024

Our first introduction to intravenous (IV) nutrition therapy was reading about Myers Cocktails. No, this isn’t a drink. It is a ‘cocktail’ of IV vitamins and minerals given intravenously to improve a variety of health conditions. The theory is that giving vitamins and minerals through the vein and bypassing the gut would result in better nutritional access to the cell by achieving higher concentrations in your blood stream.

John Myers, MD, a physician from Baltimore, Maryland, pioneered the use of intravenous (IV) vitamins and minerals as part of the overall treatment of various medical problems, including general fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, relieve acute asthma attacks, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinus infections, seasonal allergies, migraine headaches, muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, as well as to support recovery from endurance athletics. He treated patients with IV nutrition therapy for about 25 years with good benefits. While it can be used for a variety of health conditions, it can also be used to proactively maintain health.

The advantage with IV nutrients is that concentrations in the blood stream can far exceed what you would get orally. With Vitamin C, for example, if you take too much, you can experience diarrhea so this can be the rate limiting effect of oral Vitamin C. With IV Vitamin C, you can achieve much higher concentrations in the blood stream thereby having a significant antiviral or antihistamine effect that one can’t achieve with oral doses. If cells are repeatedly “flooded” with nutrients, the improvement may be cumulative in their ability to heal, and improve their condition.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for humans as we do not make this. High-dose vitamin C has been studied as a treatment for patients with cancer since the 1970’s. A Scottish surgeon named Ewan Cameron, MD, worked with Nobel Prize-winning chemist Linus Pauling to study the possible benefits of vitamin C therapy in clinical trials of cancer patients in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The anticancer effect of vitamin C in different types of cancer cells involves a chemical reaction that makes hydrogen peroxide, which may kill cancer cells. It is Ideal for toxicity, hepatitis, acute and recurring infections, cancer, fatigue, weakness, Mononucleosis, and other chronic viruses.

Hydrogen peroxide intravenous therapy is a powerful oxidant. When administered intravenously, an enzyme in the blood called catalase splits the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. A small amount of hydrogen peroxide can supply large amounts of oxygen to the tissues. As we all know, hydrogen peroxide foams when it is put it on a wound or cut. The foam is oxygen being produced by the action of the enzyme catalase on the peroxide. The singlet oxygen has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects. Hydrogen peroxide intravenous therapy is also helpful for asthma, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, degenerative spinal disc disease, vascular heart disease and high blood pressure.

With powerful IV tools at our disposal, we can assist in facilitating healing using nutritional therapy at concentrations that are significantly more than what can be achieved through oral dosing. IV nutrition is especially important in this day and age where gut related issues can create malabsorption or malnutrition.
